Certified, Sworn and Apostilled Translations
Certified and sworn translations, apostille services and document legalization support for universities, consulates, citizenship applications, international procedures and administrative requirements in Italy and abroad.
When Do You Need a Certified Translation?
Not every document requires the same type of certification. Universities, public authorities, consulates, companies and institutions may have different requirements depending on where and how a document will be used.
Depending on the destination country, the type of document and the requirements of the receiving authority, you may need a sworn translation, an agency-certified translation, an apostille or another form of legalization.
If you are unsure which procedure applies, we can review your document and its intended use before you commit to a particular service. In many cases, a simpler procedure is all that is required, avoiding unnecessary costs and formalities.
Not sure what your document requires? We can help you identify the appropriate certification or legalization procedure at no charge.
Which procedure does your document need?
Sworn Translation in Italy
A sworn translation involves a formal procedure in which the translator or appointed professional takes an oath before the competent Italian authority, formally declaring that the translation faithfully reflects the source document and assuming responsibility for that declaration. The required revenue stamps are applied as part of the procedure, giving the translation formal standing for the purposes for which sworn translations are recognized under Italian law.
Commonly required for:
- Notarial deeds
- Civil status certificates and driving licenses
- Court judgments
- Academic documents for recognition or equivalency procedures
- Citizenship and jure sanguinis applications
Apostille for Sworn Translations
When a sworn translation is intended for use abroad, an apostille may also be required in countries where the Hague Apostille Convention applies. We can coordinate the apostille process following the sworn translation so that the completed documentation is prepared for submission to the relevant foreign authority or institution.
Commonly required for:
- International administrative procedures
- Documents intended for use abroad
- Citizenship applications abroad
- Consular procedures
- Academic and professional documents
Agency-Certified Translation
For procedures that do not require a formal sworn translation, we can issue an agency certification confirming the accuracy and completeness of the translation. The certification is provided on our letterhead and signed and stamped by Perenchio Translations. This option is commonly used for corporate, academic and administrative purposes where an agency-certified translation is accepted by the receiving organization.
Commonly used for:
- Universities
- Companies
- Internal corporate procedures
- Private organizations
- Professional documentation
Consular Legalization
For documents intended for countries where an apostille is not applicable, consular legalization or other authentication procedures may be required. We help determine the procedure requested by the destination authority and can assist with coordinating the necessary formalities.
May be required for:
- Documents intended for countries where the apostille procedure does not apply
- Consular applications
- Complex international procedures
- Documents subject to country-specific authentication requirements

Frequently asked questions
A sworn translation is completed through a formal procedure in which the translator declares before the competent authority that the translation faithfully reflects the source document. An apostille serves a different purpose: it authenticates the relevant public signature or certification so that the document can be recognized abroad in countries where the Hague Apostille Convention applies.
The sworn translation itself does not normally have an expiration date. However, the authority receiving the document may require a recently issued original or impose specific validity periods for the documents submitted as part of the procedure.
Yes. In most cases, a clear scan or PDF is enough for us to review the documents, assess the requirements and prepare a quote.
It depends on the procedure. A digital copy is normally sufficient for an initial assessment and quote. Before proceeding, we recommend checking whether the receiving authority requires the translation to be sworn against the original document or whether another form of documentation is acceptable. This can help avoid unnecessary costs or additional procedures.
Turnaround depends on the language pair, the volume and complexity of the documents, and whether additional procedures such as a sworn translation or apostille are required. Once we have reviewed your documents and requirements, we can provide a specific delivery estimate.
That depends on the destination country and the requirements of the authority or institution receiving the document. An agency-certified translation may be sufficient in some cases, while others may require a sworn translation, an apostille or additional legalization procedures. We therefore recommend confirming the exact requirements with the receiving authority before proceeding.
Yes. If you need the original hard-copy documentation, we can arrange express courier delivery to the address you provide.
Whenever possible. We assess urgent requests individually based on linguist availability, document preparation, translation time and any sworn translation, apostille or legalization procedures involved.
A sworn translation involves a formal procedure before the competent authority. An agency-certified translation is accompanied by a statement issued directly by Perenchio Translations confirming the accuracy and completeness of the translation, with our company signature and stamp. Some organizations accept agency certification, while others require a formal sworn translation. The correct option depends on the requirements of the receiving authority.
